This week, after beginning a new dog blog titled, “The Canine Companion” http://thecaninecompanion.wordpress.com/ I took a couple of days off of writing. Sometimes, the wheels and cogs in my brain don’t like to turn off; they just keep motoring on like the Energizer bunny on a meth bender. I’m sure this is the case with most writers because once you get in a groove, you don’t want to stop in fear that the well may just dry up and you’ll suddenly forget how to write. Naturally, that’s ridiculous but so is Gangham Style and people are still spazzing out to that shit. (Somewhere, in a palace on the far side of Korea, sits a lavishly clad Psy, laughing his rich ass off to the “silly Americans” that made him famous.) So, I took a couple of days off complete with guilt and constant worry that no one would be reading my blog if I wasn’t writing but shag it, I put away my laptop. Ok, that’s not entirely true as I had some much needed viewing pleasure in the form of ghost crap and documentaries.
First thing I did was take my dogs for a walk. I have mini dachshunds so they’re not exactly marathon walkers but we had a nice warm sunny day so I took advantage of the weather to wear my dogs out. If you’ve ever watched dachshunds walk/run down a sidewalk, you must, it’s ridiculously cute. We then enjoyed some play time and of course our favorite, nap time. There is nothing cozier than being sandwiched by two dogs and lulled in to a restful sleep. Restful sleep that was another thing I did. It may not sound like fun, but it’s fun to me and quite frankly, if I could earn a living being a professional sleeper, I would have done that instead of going to University.
Next fun thing I did, I didn’t really clean. I mean, my house isn’t dirty by any stretch but I refused to give in to my urge to scrub floors and clean the bathroom, I mean really, what’s another day? I’m not hosting any championship shitting events any time soon in my bathroom so again, I slacked on that.
The topper to my fun weekend was double play dates! I’m a little bit addicted to games like Rockband, Guitar Hero and DJ Hero, so having my all time best friend of thirty plus years over to rock out was super fun and relaxing, then later that evening, we had friends over for more. Getting together with friends is so rare these days as everyone’s busy in their own lives, it’s hard to find the time to get together but I guess that just makes it all the more special when you do.
I find in this day and age, maybe because of the economy, maybe because of all the multi tasking we force ourselves to do, trying to squeeze each proverbial drop out of our 24 hour days that we simply don’t take enough time to relax, unwind and recharge. It does you no good to work until there’s nothing left of you and not experience the fun things, the enjoyable things in life that make it worth living. So ladies, I urge you today to leave off your bra, stay in your sweats and guys, go commando all the way and just let it hang. I have been in fleece pants all weekend and I just don’t give a crap. Go out and have some fun with your children, your dogs, your Aunt Bernice, climb a tree, play some board games with friends. Put your life in to perspective and don’t the fun things pass you by.
